The song lyrics
Santiano by Santiano tell the story of a sailor's life and the freedom on the high seas. The song is about the separation from a loved one when the sailor embarks on a great journey.
In the first verse it says: "The farewell is difficult, says: My girl, goodbye! Cast off (full speed ahead) Santiano. The tears are salty and deep like the sea, but my sailor's heart burns brightly." Here, the emotional heaviness of the farewell is described, but also the passion and fire that burns in a sailor's heart.
In the chorus, the freedom and adventurous spirit of the sailor are emphasized: "As far as the sea and the wind carry us, hoist the sails, full speed ahead, Santiano. Straight ahead, when the sea calls us, we sail out, into the sunset." It's about how far the sailor is willing to go to follow the call of the sea and seek adventure.
The second verse describes the image of the sailor with taut sails and the sinking moon: "The sails unfurled and facing the wind, cast off (full speed ahead Santiano). Do you see there where the moon sinks, we want to be before the day begins." Here, the longing for freedom and experiencing special moments at sea is expressed.
In the third verse, the sailor's attitude towards life is described: "I don't need a home and I don't need money, cast off (full speed ahead) Santiano. Our castle is the whole world, our blanket is the starry sky." The sailor doesn't need a fixed home or material possessions, they feel at home at sea and are connected to the whole world.
The chorus is repeated and once again emphasizes the freedom and call of the sea. The farewell is difficult, but the sailor is ready to part from their loved one and sail into the vast seas. The song lyrics convey the longing for freedom, adventure, and dedication to the sailor's life.
