Interpretation

"A Boy Named Sue" is a song by Johnny Cash that tells the story of a boy who was named Sue by his father. After the father left the family when the boy was three years old, the boy had to endure many fights and mockery due to his feminine name, which made him tough and resilient. He swore to find his father and kill him to seek revenge for the shame his name had caused him.

When he finally finds his father in a bar in Gatlinburg, a violent fight ensues in which the father cuts off a piece of the boy's ear and they crash through walls and into the street. But instead of killing his father, he listens to his father's words, who explains that he gave him the name Sue to make him stronger, knowing that he wouldn't be there to help him in life.

He says that he named the boy Sue to force him to be tough and fight for himself. The father explains that the world is tough and one has to be strong to make it. Although the son has the right to kill him, the father tells him to thank him for making him tough.

At the end of the song, the son throws down his weapon and calls his father 'Pa', and they part ways with a different perspective. The son says that if he ever has a son, he would name him Frank, George, Bill, or Tom, but never Sue, because he doesn't want his son to go through the same struggle he went through. Overall, the song is a story of toughness, strength, and survival."
