Interpretation
The song "En el muelle de San Blas" by
Maná is a sad love story about loyalty, hope, and loneliness.
It tells the story of a woman who waits for the return of her beloved, who departed on a ship from the port of San Blas. He promised to come back, and in tears, she promised to wait for him ("Ella despidió a su amor, el partió en un barco en el muelle de San Blas, él juró que volvería, y empapada en llanto ella juró que esperaría").
Years pass, and she still waits for him, always in the same dress, hoping that he will recognize her ("Llevaba el mismo vestido, y por si él volviera no se fuera a equivocar"). Her loneliness and sadness are symbolized by the attack of crabs on her clothing ("Los cangrejos le mordían sus ropajes, su tristeza y su ilusión").
Over time, she falls in love with the sea, and her body becomes rooted to the dock, symbolizing her deep connection and refusal to leave the place ("Y del mar se enamoró y su cuerpo se enrraizó en el muelle").
