Interpretation
The lyrics of 'Merry Christmas allerseits' by
Udo Jürgens are a humorous and satirical portrayal of the Christmas season. The verses are written in a mixture of German and English and tell stories of everyday scenarios during the holidays.
In the first verse, he sings about the arrival of the Christmas season, characterized by the joy of children, the snow, and the need for mulled wine. He also describes the rush of shopping and how people almost have a 'heart attack' because they are so stressed. 'Every Parkhaus is besetzt, weil die people fahren jetzt all to Kaufhaus Mediamarkt, kriegen nearly Herzinfakt.'
The following verses humorously describe family scenes: the mother baking cakes in the kitchen, the father falling off the ladder while decorating the Christmas tree, and the children eagerly waiting for their presents. 'Mother in the kitchen bakes Schokonuss and Mandelcakes, Daddy in the Nebenraum, schmücks a Riesen-Weihnachtsbaum, he is hanging auf the balls, when he from the leiter falls.'
Udo Jürgens also pokes fun at typical Christmas gifts like a new Teflon pan for the mother and ties and socks for the father. 'Mama finds under the Tanne eine brand new Teflonpfanne, Papa gets a Schlips und Socken, Everybody does frohlocken.'
The song ends with a catastrophe: the Christmas goose burns in the oven and the fire department has to come. But despite it all, Udo Jürgens still sings 'Frohe Weihnacht, Merry Christmas allerseits', conveying the message that Christmas, despite all the chaos, is a time of joy and togetherness. 'And then comes the Feuerwehr with Tatü-ta-ta daher, and they bring a long long Schlauch and a long long Leiter auch, and they schrei Wasser marsch, Christmas is now im Eimer, Merry Christmas, merry Christmas, Hear the music see the lights, Frohe Weihnacht, frohe Weihnacht, Merry christmas allerseits.'
